RealVNC is a program that allows you to control desktops via a network connection, and is compatible with firewalls and VPNs as well. The Free Edition provides basic but full functionality, and the Personal and Enterprise versions offer more features such as secure transfers for more platforms. Educational and non-profit discounts are available.

- Low profile remote control software, free. Widely used, works through firewalls with minimal firewall adjustment. Works in-house and over VPN's. Reasonably stable. End-user can initiate a session to you if you can't get in to them. e.g. if their Internet connection doesn't have a static IP. Widely used.
- Cons:
- When it fails, it is hard to get it working again remotely without a reboot. Version 4.10 (?) had a security breach. Be sure to get the latest version and/or upgrade existing systems to latest 4.1.2. Otherwise other people can easily break the password. Passwords not strong. Not integrated with Windows (that's sometimes a plus) Does not handle file transfers, but does cut and paste of text. Does not work with Macs
I find it the easiest and most economical remote product to use and deploy. Currently use it on several hundred clients and servers at about 14 locations.
